Ecobuild 2014: Moving from site waste management to a circular economy

Charlie Law, Head of Environment Management, BAM Construct UK talks at Ecobuild 2014 about moving from site waste management to a circular economy.

Landfill sites in the UK are due to be full by 2019. While the government in England has repealed the requirement for site waste management plans for construction sites, the Welsh Assembly have consulted on this in Wales and Scotland is taking a different approach. Aggregate tax and landfill tax have made a significant difference to waste management in that waste is increasingly being seen as a potential resource. The larger contracting companies may be committed to responsible management strategies as part of their overall sustainability programme but a percentage of waste is produced by small and medium contractors who may do their sums differently. Will 'economics' save the day or is legislation the only way to create a level playing field? Can voluntary agreements help the industry collaborate and make progress? What is the responsible approach to materials and waste management and what are the sustainability strategies for success?
