Demand side response in the non-domestic sector

The findings of an Element Energy-led study into the potential for demand side response (DSR) were published by Ofgem on July 31 2012. The study, commissioned by the UK electricity regulator Ofgem, analyses electricity demand profiles and estimates the potential for DSR to reduce peak demands on the grid due to non-domestic buildings (which contribute around 30% to total peak demands nationally). The report finds that DSR in commercial and public buildings offers the potential to reduce peak demands on the British electricity grid by 1–4.5GW. Barriers to further uptake of DSR and enabling mechanisms required to further exploit this technical potential are also discussed.
