Ecobuild 2014: Design of low-temperature domestic heating systems

Bruce Young, Building Research Establishment (BRE)
presented Design of low-temperature domestic heating systems at Ecobuild 2014.

Low carbon heating systems need careful design. Existing combustion based heating technologies have been standardised to a level where they are often selected rather than designed. This approach does not work for the new technologies such as biomass and heat pumps where the heating system has to be very carefully matched to the technology. This session will discuss overall approaches to design and look at some of the specifics including low temperature heat emitters, getting the ventilation right and the differences between actual and designed building performance. It will cover both new build projects and retrofitting low carbon technologies to existing buildings.
