Measuring Progress: Sustainable Development indicators 2010

This Defra National Statistics publication aims to be a useful and
accessible reference for experts, to help illustrate the breadth and
challenges of sustainable development to those less familiar with
the concept, and to encourage readers to find out more.

Sustainable development is about enabling people to satisfy their
basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life, without compromising
the quality of life of future generations. It combines important
social, environmental and economic goals.

The 68 indicators in this publication - measures of everyday
concerns including health, housing, jobs, crime, education and our
environment - aim to provide an overview of progress across four

• Climate change and energy
• Protecting natural resources and enhancing the environment
• Creating sustainable communities.
