Conventions and Standards for the Refurbishment of Traditional Buildings

Three short papers detailing standards governing the sustainable treatment of existing buildings:
1: A Short Paper on the Conventions and Standards that govern the understanding of moisture risk in traditional buildings, by Dr Caroline Rye & Neil May
2: A Short Paper on the Conventions and Standards that govern the understanding of heat loss in traditional buildings, by Dr Caroline Rye
3: A Short Paper on Internal Wall Insulation, by Neil May.

This suite of documents collectively highlight that recognised guidance in measuring moisture risk, heat loss and the application of internal wall insulation for retrofit solutions is not suitable for analysis pre-1919 solid wall construction. Documents '2' and '3' include a useful summary of 'consequences' which summarise key problems this industry approach is potentially exacerbating through not using sufficiently sophisticated analysis.
The reports are technical, but clearly set out the current problems which practitioners need to be aware of. These are a call for greater resources to be focused on finding methods of measuring fabric performance accurately to aide retrofit schemes to be appropriately deployed.
