The UK has a long history of wildlife conservation dating back to the establishment of royal hunting grounds, such as the New Forest, in the 11th century. However, the 20th century saw increasing concern regarding the loss of wildlife on a national scale, mainly because of changes in agricultural, practice and increased development.

This guide is intended to be used to allow those working on construction projects to stay within the law, and to understand and adopt good practice in relation to wildlife.
