Jill O'Grady, Muse Developments Ltd

Sustainability is a complex subject and its application in the built environment is constantly changing. Muse Developments has wide experience in urban renewal schemes, many of which are exemplars of sustainable regeneration.

Our professional team completed the UKGBC online course: “Introduction to Sustainability in the Built Environment” to build on their understanding and give them the tools necessary to embed sustainability into their everyday decision making.

As the UKGBC course is delivered online and over five modules it provided a level of flexibility that suited the demanding workloads and changing diary commitments of our professional team. We were able to offer our team a choice of course start dates throughout 2011 and if necessary, move our delegates to other cohorts if their workload dictated.

With the support of staff at the UKGBC our professional team undertook the training with a minimum of fuss and without it impacting upon their already challenging roles.

I thought the course succeeded in pulling together the broad range of sustainability issues and balanced the wider context of issues such as climate change with a practical focus. I thought that the combination of presentation styles (videos, slides, interactive demonstrations) made this an engaging course.

The STEP course provides a really good basis for understanding why sustainability is going to be increasingly important for everyone in the built environment to deal with. Doing the STEP course will enable people working across the built environment to appreciate how all of the relevant sustainability issues join together and impact on every aspect of the property lifecycle. If organisations want to ensure they remain competitive in the built environment, they need to make sure their people understand the issues covered in the STEP course.

The Introduction to Sustainability course has been a successful method of ensuring all our new recruits receive a grounding in the value of integrating Sustainability into everyday thinking and actions.

The ease of booking the course has been an added bonus, with a group booking system enabling just one booking form to be used for 10+ delegates. Emailing the form directly to STEP speeds up the booking process and you receive prompt confirmation of the bookings. The clarity of the booking form enables you to see delegate details and course start dates in one view, facilitating course management. Any additional delegates can swiftly be added to the list before emailing directly to STEP, who then efficiently take over the course administration.

This course provides a good introduction to all aspects of sustainability in the built environment. The breadth of content covering all phases of a building's lifecycle is particularly useful, as is the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas, via the online forum, with other trainees from a diverse range of backgrounds in the industry.
