Bennetts Associates - Hampshire County Council HQ Retrofit

This case study looks at the refurbishment of Elizabeth Court, based in the centre of Winchester which was a tired, dilapidated 1960s office block.

The existing buildings suffered from a poor internal environment and an aggressive external presence which jarred with the sensitive historic context.

New contextual high-performance fa├žades, exposure of the existing coffered concrete slabs, engineered natural ventilation and other sustainable technologies deliver a 70% reduction in energy use. The operational emission target of 25-30 kg CO2/m2/annum for the completed building.

I often use this project as a example of sustainability being integrated into the design as simply another aspect of great quality. The case study is pretty comprehensive and includes some good statistics.
